Estuarine Sediments as bio-markers for metal pollution on Tamilnadu coast

(Bio-geochemical study)

Principal Investigator:     Dr. T. Ramkumar, Dept. of Geology, Annamalai University,

                                           Annamalai Nagar, Tamilnadu, India

Duration:                          Two Year

Man Power:                      1 Research Fellow, 1 Technical Asst.

Objectives

i.                    investigation of the nature and association of the trace metals with sediments with emphasis on speciation of trace metals.

ii.                  Quantification of the reactive geochemical species distribution of trace metals in the estuarine environment.

iii.                Identification of source of metal and its species

iv.                 Quantification of the reactive species in important shell species

Findings:

  1. Heavy minerals viz. Garnet, Amphiboles, Chlorite, Epidote, Dipside and Kyanite are fairlyabundant .

  2. Rutile, Zincron, Hypersthene, sillimanite are in minor amount.

  3. Distribution of copper and zinc in the environment along with nature of the environmental Parameters has extensively being studied
