Objectives:

i.       Characterization of different ecological zones in the Chilika lagoon.

ii.      Change detection analysis of the landuse/ land cover

iii.     Change in landform configuration of the outer channel.

Findings:

  1. Spatial and temporal variation of different water quality parameters are observed in different sectors of the lagoon. I

  2. Increase in the rate of siltation and subsequently decrease of the depth, particularly at the Northern sector of Chilka.

  3. Choking and shifting of mouth at the Magarmukh and New mouth region

  4. Progressive shrinkage of water spread area.

  5. Development of aquaculture activities (Ghery culture) in side the lagoon

  6. Change in landform units of the surrounding environments

Benefits:

This study will be useful for the restoration and better management of the Chilka lagoon environment
