Waste management  in coastal zone protection in Orissa state

Principal Investigator:  Dr. B.K. Sahu, Dept. of Marine Sciences, Berhampur  University,

                                        Berhampur, Orissa

Sanctioned cost:            INR 561000.00

Man Power:                   2 Research Fellow and 1 Lab. Asst.

Tenure:                          2 year

Objectives:

i.                   To identify the major sources of waste producers (industrial, agricultural, domestic or urban, aquaculture ponds, salt pans etc.) and their pathways and quantification

ii.                 To find out methods of waste treatment, disposal and/ or recycling.

Findings:

  1. Agricultural, industrial and domestic wastes increase  the  pollution level in the coastal zone of Orissa

  2. Important physico-chemical characteristics of waste water and sediments exhibit significant spatio-temporal variation. These, in facts, indicate an increasing trend from lower reaches (marine dominant) to the upper reaches (fresh water dominant) of the study region.

Benefit:

In this study, a treatment plant for sewage, having good recovery of pollutants at minimum effort would help for the waste water management of the coastal area
